Cleaning Toys and Play Areas in Childcare Centres

A toy goes in a mouth, gets put down, and thirty seconds later it is in another child’s hands. That is not a hygiene failure. That is Tuesday, in every centre in the country, and no cleaning routine will change it.
What a cleaning program can change is the state of the room those toys are in, how often the high-use items get properly cleaned, and whether the people doing it are the right people to have in a building full of children in the first place.
That second part is where most conversations about childcare cleaning should start, and rarely do.
Who is allowed in the room
Before anything about toys or floors, a childcare director needs to know who is walking through the centre after hours.
Every worker we send to child-related work holds a current Working with Children Check, a Blue Card issued under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 (Qld). We verify it before the work starts and monitor it for currency, so nobody turns up on a site with a card that lapsed six months ago.
Beyond the card itself, we run a documented Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy that every worker reads and signs before working at or near a site where children may be present. It is built around the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, and our director is the named Safeguarding Officer, so concerns go to a person rather than an inbox.
The practical parts that matter on your site:
- A code of conduct covering professional boundaries, and a requirement that another adult is present or in sight during any one-on-one interaction with a child
- Recruitment screening that includes behavioural interview questions on safeguarding, at least two referee checks and qualification checks
- A strict no-photography policy at client sites. Where we need images of completed work, written consent is obtained first and recording happens only in areas with no children present
- Regular child safety training, with safeguarding a standing item in supervision and team meetings
- Complaints acknowledged with a response timeframe inside three business days
We provide that policy, along with our capability statement and WHS documents, when we quote. You should not have to ask for it.
What routine cleaning covers
A childcare cleaning program starts with the centre, not a template. We walk the site, look at the classrooms, play areas, amenities, flooring and how the rooms are actually used, and build the scope of work from that.
For toys and play spaces, a routine scope typically covers:
- Cleaning toys and play equipment included in the agreed scope
- Wiping activity tables and children’s furniture
- Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces
- Removing dirt and debris from play areas and mat spaces
- Cleaning floors throughout activity rooms
- Cleaning around furniture, storage units and fixed equipment
- Closer attention to the busiest rooms and highest-use items
The last point does most of the work. A shared indoor play space used by three groups a day and a quiet room used twice a week do not need the same routine, and pretending otherwise is how centres end up paying for cleaning in the wrong places.
Toys, and being honest about who cleans what
Toys are the part every director asks about, and the answer is usually messier than a website makes it sound.
Some items are ours to clean, some stay with your educators, and some depend on what the item is made of and how it is used. Hard plastic toys wiped down after a session are a different job to soft furnishings, dress-ups or anything that goes through a wash cycle.
We settle that at the site visit rather than leaving it vague. What we clean, how often, and what remains with your team gets written into the scope of work, so there is no grey area at 6pm when nobody is sure whose job something was. In our experience that single conversation prevents more complaints than any product on a shelf.
Play areas are more than the toys
The condition of a room is not set by what is on the shelves. Children spend the day at tables and chairs, on floors and mats, in and out of storage areas, and the dirt collects around the furniture rather than in the middle of the room where it is easy to see.
Our cleaning covers the wider environment in the agreed scope, with attention weighted toward the spaces that take the most daily use. Around fixed equipment and storage units, we clean the areas our team can safely reach rather than working only where the floor is open.
Any site-specific instruction, from a piece of equipment that needs particular handling to a room with restricted access, goes into the scope before the first clean.
Working around a centre that is open
Childcare has tighter constraints than most commercial sites. Rooms are occupied, hours are long, and there is limited appetite for cleaners moving through a space while children are in it.
We plan the schedule around how your centre runs, and we set out the access arrangements in advance: keys, codes or fobs for every area being serviced, and who to speak to on arrival. Our team discusses the plan with management before starting.
One thing we ask of you in return, because it makes the work safer and faster: it is your management who briefs in-house staff on what is happening and where. It is not practical for our team to brief every educator individually, and where periodical work is underway we set up exclusion zones that need to stay clear.
The deeper cleans childcare centres actually need
Routine cleaning handles the everyday. It does not, on its own, deal with everything a centre accumulates over a year.
Periodical work sits alongside the contract and is scheduled when the site needs it:
- Carpet steam cleaning in classrooms and mat areas
- Upholstery cleaning
- Hard floor scrubbing and polishing
- External window cleaning using a water-fed pole system, purified water only, no chemicals and no ladders over play areas
- Gutter cleaning and pressure washing for outdoor play spaces
Carpet steam cleaning is the one most centres book, and it needs planning rather than a phone call on the day. Carpets stay slightly damp afterwards, so the work is scheduled around closures or quiet periods, and we confirm access and timing with you before the team arrives.
Hand towel, soap and the things that run out
Childcare centres get through hand towel and soap at a rate most offices never approach, and restocking it usually falls to whoever noticed the dispenser was empty.
For our regular clients we supply and restock the everyday consumables, with free delivery:
- Toilet rolls
- Hand towels
- Hand soap
- Urinal mats
Clients who commit to a 24-month contract also have their dispensers supplied free of charge. It takes a recurring purchase order off your administrator’s desk and puts it inside the cleaning service.
How we set it up
We do not send a generic package and a price.
The process starts with a site visit, where we assess the centre and its requirements before preparing a plan. You then receive the quote alongside our policy documents and capability statement, so you can see exactly who you would be working with before committing to anything. Our team is police checked and inducted, and we carry $20 million public liability insurance.
Once the service starts, you and our team both receive a notice five days before recurring work is due. It covers the date, the work routine, the safety precautions on each side, access requirements and any site-specific guidelines. You know who is coming and when, well before they arrive.
GC Assure keeps the standard consistent
Centres change. Enrolments grow, rooms get repurposed, new equipment arrives, and a scope written at the start of a contract stops matching the site.
GC Assure is our quality framework and it is how the standard holds while that happens. It works in four layers aligned with ISSA CIMS and BICSc principles, covering daily readiness before a shift starts, shift closure when the work is finished, and objective audits across the site. That gives us measurable visibility over every site, every cleaner and every shift.
It means a drop in standard gets picked up by us rather than reported by you. And when something at your centre changes, tell us and we will update the scope of work to match it.
Childcare cleaning across Brisbane and the Gold Coast
We provide commercial cleaning for childcare centres, kindergartens and schools across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
A childcare cleaning program should fit the centre it serves: the classrooms, the play areas, the amenities, the operating hours, and the compliance expectations that come with running a site full of children. Routine cleaning keeps it maintained, periodical work handles the deeper cleans, and the screening behind the people doing it is not an optional extra.
Arrange a site visit
If you manage a childcare centre in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast, we can come to your site, look at what needs cleaning and put together a clear scope of work covering the routine service and the periodical work.
It is also the right time to ask us the compliance questions. Blue Cards, our child safety policy, insurance, what we hold on file and what we can produce for your own accreditation records.
Get in touch with GC Cleaning to arrange a site visit and talk through what your centre needs.
Frequently asked questions
Do your cleaners hold Blue Cards?
Yes. Every worker engaged in child-related work holds a current, not-prohibited Working with Children Check, verified before the work starts and monitored for currency.
Do you clean while the centre is open?
That depends on the site. We plan the schedule around your operating hours and how the rooms are used, and periodical work such as carpet steam cleaning is normally scheduled around closures or quiet periods.
Who cleans the toys, your team or ours?
It is decided at the site visit and written into the scope of work, because it varies by centre and by the type of item. What matters is that it is documented rather than assumed.
Can you provide documentation for our accreditation records?
We provide our Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy, WHS documentation, insurance details and capability statement at quoting stage, and they are available on request at any time.
Do you supply hand towel and soap?
Yes, for regular clients, with free delivery. Clients on a 24-month contract also have their dispensers supplied free of charge.
